Product Information
Details / Specifications

This nice Helmet Mask is made by the Suku people of the Congo. According to the mask dealer at the Rosebank Market in Johannesburg, South Africa, it is danced to stop the rain when there is too much. I can't testify to the authenticity of his story, but I thought it was interesting.  Further research shows that this style of mask is called a "Hemba" and each mask is reported to be made in the image of elders that have passed on to the spirit world. It is through supplication to these elders that the dancers hope to influence events in the human world.

Like most authentic African masks, this piece has cracks, chips and general wear which add to it's character. The raffia skirting tends to shed a bit when the mask is moved about.
